Performance Gap
A performance gap is the difference between the desired level of performance and actual performance on the job. It represents what people should be able to do versus what they are currently able to do, based on business goals, role expectations, or organizational standards.
Performance gaps can be caused by a variety of factors, including lack of knowledge or skills, unclear expectations, inefficient processes, insufficient tools or resources, or environmental and organizational barriers. Most performance gaps are not training problems. In fact, most require changes to systems, processes, incentives, or job design rather than learning solutions.
In instructional design and performance consulting, identifying the true performance gap is a critical early step. Doing so helps ensure that learning interventions are targeted, relevant, and aligned to real business needs, rather than addressing symptoms instead of root causes.
Understanding performance gaps allows organizations to design learning solutions that improve job performance, close capability gaps, and drive measurable results.
