Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS)

An Electronic Performance Support System (EPSS) is a digital tool or system designed to provide just-in-time, on-the-job assistance, guidance, and information to users in real-time. EPSS helps employees perform tasks more effectively by delivering relevant information, tools, and resources exactly when and where they need them, thereby reducing the need for extensive prior training. EPSS is particularly valuable in complex work environments where tasks require quick access to critical information or step-by-step instructions.

The concept of an Electronic Performance Support System was first introduced by Gloria Gery in her seminal work “Electronic Performance Support Systems: How and Why to Remake the Workplace Through the Strategic Application of Technology” published in 1991. Gery, often regarded as the pioneer of EPSS, defined it as a system that provides “integrated access to information, advice, learning experiences, and tools to enable high-level job performance with a minimum of support from other people.”
