Metacognition

Metacognition, often described as “thinking about one’s thinking,” refers to the higher-order cognitive processes that involve planning, monitoring, and assessing one’s understanding and performance. It encompasses a critical awareness of both a) one’s cognitive processes and strategies for learning and b) one’s identity as a thinker and learner. Metacognitive skills enable individuals to reflect on how they learn, recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and make adjustments to their strategies to improve their learning outcomes and problem-solving abilities.
