Scenario-Based Learning
Scenario-Based Learning is an instructional design approach that places learners in realistic, job-related situations and asks them to make decisions, solve problems, or respond to challenges they’re likely to encounter at work. Instead of passively consuming content, learners actively apply knowledge and skills within a structured scenario and see the consequences of their choices.
Scenarios can be simple (a short decision point with feedback) or complex (branching paths that change based on learner responses). This approach is commonly used to build critical thinking, judgment, and confidence. This approach is often used for roles that require decision-making, customer interaction, compliance judgment, or risk management.
Scenario-based learning is especially effective because it mirrors real-world performance, helps learners practice safely before applying skills on the job, and reinforces learning through context rather than memorization.
