Performance consulting is a strategic approach used in learning and development to identify the real causes of workplace performance problems and determine the most effective solutions, whether training is part of the answer or not. Instead of starting with a request for a course, performance consulting begins by clarifying business goals, diagnosing gaps between current and desired performance , and examining the factors influencing employee success (such as processes, tools, incentives, environment, and capability).
 
A performance consultant partners with business leaders, subject matter experts, and stakeholders to uncover what is actually getting in the way of results. They then recommend targeted interventions such as training, job aids, workflow changes, coaching, process improvements, or other supports that enable employees to perform successfully and consistently. The goal is to ensure learning initiatives are aligned to business priorities and produce measurable impact.
