Online Training Design

Online training design is the process of creating learning experiences that are delivered digitally rather than in a physical classroom. It brings together instructional design principles, user experience thinking, and digital tools to help learners build knowledge and skills in a flexible, accessible format.
In practice, online training design can include creating self-paced eLearning, developing virtual instructor-led training (VILT) sessions, planning blended learning experiences, and producing supporting materials like videos, job aids, simulations, assessments, or interactive activities. Designers consider the learner’s environment, the business goals, and the best digital approach to help people learn efficiently and apply what they’ve learned on the job.

Online training design often produces the digital half of a blended program, sequenced with in-person or live sessions; getting that handoff right is what separates blended learning that reinforces itself from blended learning that just repeats content twice.

VILT is a live, facilitated format that online training design frequently incorporates alongside self-paced modules; designers who understand both can decide which content needs a facilitator and which doesn’t.
