xAPI (Experience API)

xAPI, also known as Tin Can API, is a modern standard for tracking, recording, and sharing learning experiences across a wide variety of platforms, environments, and devices.

Developed in 2013 by the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative, xAPI was designed to address the limitations of older eLearning standards like SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model). Unlike SCORM, which primarily tracks learning activities within traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS) through structured courses, xAPI offers a more flexible and comprehensive approach to capturing learning experiences wherever and whenever they happen—whether online, offline, in simulations, on mobile apps, or through real-world interactions.
