Leadership Development for New Managers
in High Tech Manufacturing

Executive Summary

A leading high-tech, manufacturing company faced the challenge of converting its in-person leadership development program for leaders in transition into a virtual format due to the COVID-19 shut down. The company approached TrainingPros about helping with both instructional designers for the project as well as a thought partner to help with innovative design thinking. This transformational program ensured continued exceptional development of new managers.

The Challenge

The high-tech company needed to adapt its three-day, in-person leadership development program for new managers to a blended learning virtual format. The primary objectives were to:

  • All areas of the course needed to be useful to each individual manager toward reaching business results.
  • Virtual facilitation must remain experiential rather than passive PowerPoint lectures.
  • Ensure high engagement and effective learning outcomes.
  • Provide flexibility to accommodate the global workforce’s diverse schedules and needs.

The Solution

TrainingPros provided highly experienced leadership development design consultants.  Our consultants played a critical role in the innovative instructional design and the successful transition to a virtual program. Key elements of the solution included:

  1. Pre-work: White papers, articles, and videos to provide context for upcoming virtual sessions.
  2. Virtual ILT: Our designers converted in-person instructor led content into twelve VILT sessions. These sessions were conducted twice a week, to fit participants’ schedules and maintain engagement.
  3. Interactive Learning: The VILT sessions are designed to utilize breakout sessions, scenario-based discussions, and moderated chat rooms to replicate the interactivity of in-person training.
  4. Strengths-Based Approach: The program was personalized for each individual’s strengths through Marcus Buckingham’s StandOut 2.0 assessment tool.
  5. Social Learning and Networking: Cohort learning was integrated into the design. Each offering of the program involved forming success teams for peer-to-peer learning and networking. Participants are required to interact on a monitored discussion board.
  6. Individual Case Studies: Each participant created their own case study for a business challenge.
  7. Individual Support: Individual coaching is provided to all participants and includes creating their own personal development plan.
  8. Facilitator Training and Technical Support: Facilitators were trained to leverage Zoom and WebEx for seamless virtual delivery.

The Result

he virtual new leader development program was highly successful, as indicated by:

  • 95% of participants felt the course met their expectations.
  • 100% reported increased confidence in their managerial roles.
  • The program achieved a Net Promoter Score of 88.

Participants benefited from improved team engagement, enhanced coaching skills, and better alignment with business goals. The collaborative effort between the high-tech manufacturing company and TrainingPros set a new standard for innovative and effective leadership development in a virtual format.
