Podcast Summary “Microlearning, Peer Collaboration and Leveraging the Strengths of the TikTok Generation with Nicole Sandoval of European Wax Center”

Trainingpros - Nicole Sandoval - Microlearning

Nicole Sandoval, Senior Director of Learning and Development at European Wax Center (EWC), didn’t set out to become a learning leader. But like many in the field, she found her calling after “stumbling into” it. What started as a trainer role, opening new locations and connecting with franchisees across the country, evolved into a deep passion for developing people. That passion now fuels her work leading learning strategy for more than 1,000 EWC franchise locations across the United States.

The Path to L&D

Nicole’s early days in L&D were hands-on and high-energy. As a trainer traveling across the country, she was face-to-face with learners and franchisees, helping open new centers and witnessing first-hand those lightbulb moments when everything clicked. She calls those “aha” moments cliché, but also incredibly meaningful.

It was this foundation of connection, communication, and impact that set the tone for her career. Nicole moved up through the ranks at EWC, ultimately stepping into a senior leadership role where she now oversees a team responsible for shaping learning and development strategy across the organization’s expansive franchise model.

Evolving with the Industry

Nicole thrives on the fast pace and continuous evolution of the L&D field. “There’s always something new,” she says, whether it’s a new business initiative, an emerging technology, or a shift in how people prefer to learn. What keeps her engaged is the opportunity to rethink approaches constantly and bring fresh perspectives to every challenge.

One of the most significant shifts she’s observed in recent years? The rise of microlearning and the growing presence of artificial intelligence in L&D. Nicole is particularly intrigued by how AI can personalize learning paths and improve the efficiency of training. Although she’s only beginning to explore its full capabilities, she’s excited about diving deeper into that space—and she’s not alone. As she points out, many professionals are still getting their footing with AI, but recognize its potential.

What’s Next in L&D?

Looking ahead, Nicole sees experiential learning and collaborative tools becoming even more essential. She points to a generation influenced by the “TikTok way” expecting quick, digestible content and interactive experiences. But it’s not just about attention spans; today’s learners also crave connection.

To meet that demand, Nicole’s team is preparing to roll out a powerful collaboration feature in their LMS. It will allow designated experts across the network to share tips and videos while creating space for others to engage, ask questions, and learn in real time. It’s part of EWC’s broader strategy to move beyond “one and done” training and foster a continuous learning culture, mixing initial onboarding with ongoing virtual and in-person events.

The Hardest Skill to Hire For

Nicole is quick to name the most difficult skillset to find today: those who can translate emerging trends like AI or short-form learning into real, actionable strategy. It’s one thing to be aware of these trends; it’s another to build meaningful learning experiences around them. She sees a gap between theoretical understanding and practical execution and emphasizes the need for L&D professionals who can bridge that divide.

Favorite Learning Resources

When it comes to staying current, Nicole’s go-to resource isn’t a publication, it’s her peers. She values learning from others who operate in similar business models, especially those familiar with the unique challenges of franchising. Peer-to-peer sharing, she says, is often the most impactful.

She also encourages investment in industry conferences and professional organizations like ATD, IFA, and SHRM. These spaces offer exposure to new tools, fresh thinking, and opportunities to connect with others navigating the same complexities.

A Milestone Moment

One of Nicole’s proudest moments came when her team’s work was recognized with a global gold award, the first learning and development award in EWC’s history. She’d long believed their innovative work, including training with 3D modeling, deserved broader recognition. Partnering with TrainingPros helped make that dream a reality.

The award was more than a trophy, it was validation of years of thoughtful, creative work and a milestone both professionally and personally for Nicole. “We were really excited and proud of that,” she says

Nicole Sandoval’s story is a reminder of how impactful L&D can be when it’s rooted in passion, built on relationships, and driven by curiosity. She continues to shape a future at EWC where learning is integrated, collaborative, and—above all—human-centered.
